Anpex82 - Philatelic Exhibition
1982 - a Time Capsule of a year's events in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
ANPEX 82 the Australian National Philatelic Exhibition.

The next section covers the National Philatelic Exhibition Anpex82 held in the RNA Showgrounds from 11th to 17th October. This was the first National Philatelic Exhibition to be held in Brisbane, and Australia Post Marketing Section in Brisbane produced this Pictorial envelope. The image on the cover is a well-known Brisbane landmark. Information from the back of the envelope explains that it is the old windmill built by convicts in 1828 when the penal settlement of Moreton Bay was under the command of Captain Logan. It is the oldest surviving and first industrial building in what is now Queensland. It has been used as a Signal Station, a storehouse for specimens for the future Queensland Museum, a Fire Brigade lookout, and for pioneer T.V. broadcasting experiments. The Time Ball on top of the observation cabin was introduced on 1 January, 1895, and was dropped electrically at 1.00 pm daily (except Sundays).

Each day a new cancellation was in use at the Exhibition which showed some aspect of that day's events. The first day was cancelled in green ink, the last day in red, and all the other days in black ink. This was the first time such a procedure had been followed by Australia Post, and the postmarks proved popular with collectors.

These are the postmarks in date order:-

The pre-stamped envelope has an engraving of the Brisbane Post Office in 1872, and the banner above it is taken from a Queensland postcard of the 1870s. The stamp design includes one of the most attractive of all Queensland colonial stamp issues, the £1 issue of 1883 - the Chalon portrait.

The miniature sheet was one of the 'limited editions' items produced by the Anpex 82 Committee, in advance, for publicity and for raising funds.

This is a photo of the Post Office at the beginning of the Exhibition and underneath a copy of the ANPEX 82 slogan which was in the machine supplied by Australia Post, for use by anyone attending. It was very popular, and by the look of this example the ink needed to be replenished regularly.

This is a different part of the Australia Post sales point.

This miniature sheet was the official Souvenir for the exhibition issued by the Philatelic Association of Queensland.

These are examples of the very attractive awards presented at the National competition, one the Gold and the other the Vermeil. We had 5 entries of the 384 in nine different divisions, and we were awarded 3 silvers as well.

The whole of ANPEX 82 was a great success, proving that Brisbane was able to present a National Philatelic Exhibition.
