EKKA and Warana - Festival 82 In August we saw the Ekka, (the annual Exhibition held at the R.N.A. Showgrounds in Fortitude Valley) which showcases Queensland agricultural produce.
The second photo shows the inside of the Exhibition Post Office. It was always a busy office as people come from all over Queensland for the Ekka. It is a place of excitement with many different pavilions showcasing arts & crafts, livestock, fruit & vegetables. There is also Sideshow Alley, which is always a big hit with the children. The EKKA is always in August, and has regular events like the wood-chopping which was something we had never seen before. The RNA has a website full of information about the current event.
Each year Brisbane used to hold a spring festival called "Warana", but this year it was decided to combine the events with all the build-up to the Commonwealth Games, and this was then called "Festival 82". It is a carnival of events showing the cosmopolitan heritage of Brisbane and includes cultural events from ethnic groups in the community. It took place over the period 20th September to 3rd October, and this year National Stamp Week (27th September-3rd October), was included. Australia Post issued one 27c stamp, and a First Day Cover for this event. Stamp design by Cato Hibberd Design Pty Ltd, Melbourne and the cover was designed by the Australia Post Graphic Design Section.
The information on the back of the FDC is :- National Stamp Week 1982. The 'Five-shilling Bridge' was the high value in a set of three stamps issued for the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932. Although not Australia's rarest stamp, it is still one of the most desirable items in any collection of Australian stamps. Fifty years after its issue the 'Five-shilling Bridge' reappears as the subject of a stamp commemorating National Stamp Week.
