Brisbane 1982

1982 - a Time Capsule of a year's events in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

1982 was Brisbane's year, when we were the focus of local, inter-state and world attention.

I began this collection by chance, as I was given an envelope showing the postmarks of an American warship, which I put into a box - not knowing what to do with it at the time. I am a collector and unable to throw away anything that interests me, as a result when I could get no more into the box, I had to sort it out. I found a common factor between the items was that they all marked events that happened in Brisbane in 1982. These events began in April when we had a visit from the American warship "U.S.S. TRUXTON".

This cover was stamped with the ship's cachet and datestamp, and the new Fortitude Valley post office cancellation showing the ship Fortitude which was introduced on 21-4-1982, to coincide with the issue of the Queen's birthday stamp, which was on the cover.

The rest of the year's events varied from the local - such as the Ekka, (the annual Exhibition held at the R.N.A. Showgrounds in Fortitude Valley) which showcases Queensland agricultural produce; the Australian Philatelic exhibition Anpex82; the Commonwealth Games and finally the International Scout Jamboree celebrating 75 years of the Scouting movement. Each of these has a separate section, which can be accessed from this page, or if you follow the link to the first one, you can follow the trail through each section.
