Ships Visit

1982 - a Time Capsule of a year's events in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
Ship Visit, Australian ships.....continued.

HMAS "Stalwart" Destroyer Tender
Built 1964-66, has a displacement of 15,500 tonnes. Length: 157 metres Beam: 20 metres Speed: more than 20 knots

The destroyer tender HMAS "Stalwart" is the largest naval vessel wholly designed and built in Australia. Her role is to provide destroyers with repair and maintenance facilities on a mobile basis, so the ships can spend the maximum time on duty in their operation areas. Several destroyers can be maintained by "Stalwart" at a time, and three quarters of the ship's company of nearly 400 are available for repair and maintenance.

First Australian L.C.H. Squadron

Five of the six vessels in this squadron were in Brisbane for the Ship Visit, working from their base HMAS Moreton in the Brisbane river. These vessels were all built in Maryborough Queensland, and their main task is to provide seaborne support for the Army. Each is manned by two officers and 11 sailors. They are all named after actions in World War II, when RAN ships and craft put Australian Army units ashore or did surveys preparatory to landings.

The first is HMAS "Brunei L127

The next is HMAS "Tarakan" L129. This photo shows the vessel at work, in what looks like Moreton Bay.

and the cover signed by the Lieutenant, with the stamp of the Commanding Officer.

Next is the HMAS "Labuan" L128. This was named after the landing on 10 June 1945 when Westralia and Manoora placed 24 Brigade units ashore. This name had been selected previously as the name of an RAN LST (tank landing ship) which was scrapped in 1956. This lovely photo has the unmistakeable Sydney Opera House as a background

Finally the last two HMAS Wewak and HMAS Betano

The last of the Australian vessels was the submarine HMAS Otama The newest of the First Australian Submarine Squadron, it was commissioned in 1978 and is based in North Sydney at HMAS Platypus , a shore establishment for submarine support. "Otama" is an aboriginal word meaning dolphin. The other five Oberon class submarines in the Squadron are : "Oxley", "Otway", "Onslow", "Ovens" and "Orion".
