"Mrs Pinkerton, 1813"

by Eunice Shanahan

Circular Mileage Mark Cheltenham 101.

This letter is from Mr Rennie of Cheltenham writing to Mrs. Pinkerton of Tottenham, near London.

Cheltenham April 17 1813
Dear Madam,
I received Mr Hardings letter while in London for a few days but as I had been dragged there on Parliamentary business & much harassed, which I was ill able to bear, I found myself unable to answer it

I shall have much pleasure in giving you & the Trustees of your late worthy Husband any advice I can about your affairs — but this only with the express condition of its being gratis —

With respect to the Fosdyke concern it unfortunately happened that I was not present at the conferences which took place on the subject between Mr T. P. and the committee & although I wrote Mr Rodgerson my opinion he said that it had been expressly stipulated as the contract was drawn — I have seen none of them since the agreement was made — therefore cannot say what passed on the occasion.

The Essex embankment I never saw or heard of the particulars of the agreement — But it strikes me that in this case the line to be pursued by the Executors is plain.

It should be enquired whether the Statement given in By Mr Pinkerton was according to Mr Beevers plan etc, and whether he has performed all that his contract requires — If so I would not proceed further without a Specifick agreement respecting the extra allowance — for it will not do to depend on verbal promises — It should also be ascertained how far the contract is binding upon you to compleat the work without further remuneration — if it is so I fear you have no choice but that of proceeding to its completion and that abandonment will be more injurious than completion —

My health is such at present that I cannot undertake to look over the contract
I am, Dear Madam
truly yours
John Rennie
