"Mr Stewart Esq, 1827"

1818

Boxed 2-line Mileage Mark Lockerby 327 — C.

This letter is from Mr G. Stewart of Hillende writing to William Stewart (possibly his brother?) in Edinburgh. Much of the writing is quite legible and then there are words which are impossible to decipher, so they are left in as queries.

14 Nov 1827
Dear William,
In a letter from Mr Douglas dated Vevey Nov 3 received today regarding Broon House he says "I have not heard from your Brother William whether he has yet received the certificate of my being in life on the 10 Octbr — When you write let me know, and also answer a question I put to him, as Did Lord Q's Crs secure to themselves the produce of the sale that took place at Renmont(?) If you have not written to him you should do it immediately".

On making out the Lockerbie Account just now I've put the following entries since last year in my transactions with you

"28 Nov 1817 By cash from Mr Stewart W.S. the quarter amount drawn by him for Mr Douglas £175

Deductions due to him £29 subtotal £146
21 Aug 1827 By cash from Do. on account £100
Total 246
Paid to you

Nov 15 1826 To cash to W Stewart W. S. to account of paying interest for Mr. Douglas £40
Total £206.

Now, if you have paid any of Mr Ds money for Ocbr to Sir N. I. for me, advise me immediately that I may state it in the acct as received — and as I shall be sending Mr Douglas an abstract of the Acct in 8 or 10 days I think it will be right you likewise send him an acct of his transactions with you, that he may be perfectly aware how he stands.
Perhaps it might be right that you now closed your account current with him, up to the 11th or to this time, and draw from a paid to me the balance that might be in your hand — at all events write me how it stands that I may be master of it in writing to them (?).

Send me the Acct discharged to Eagle & Henderson for £3.19.
Always my Brother
yours affectionately G. Stewart
Mr. D. has now gone to Lausanne to which you will now direct to him.

Then on the other side he continues :- I enclose Mr Sutherlands compt for £62.10 the other 10/- is of course in Mr Murrays hands.

I enclose £70 receipt Faber & Co which you may either pay on to them — or as we agreed take it on the meantime on your own account.

John Grahams son set off to Liverpool while his Father was at Dome contrary to my advice — Poor Gloss then became vexed & sorry for sending him away as he had done, and set off yesterday after him to Liverpool to get him recommended to the (wnt hide?) (hole in the paper) but before he set off Lord Bagroy (?)wrote me recommending America in a way which may cause him to send him there — you will hear what the result is when he returns from Liverpool.

Ann continues much the same."
