The West Indian coral-limestone archipelago of the Bahamas consists of 29 islands, 661 cays and about 2,387 rocks occupying a total land surface area of 13,939 km dispersed over 233,000 km of ocean. There are 17 principal islands and island groups (including Grand Bahama, Andros, Eleuthera, Great Abaco) with almost two-thirds of the population concentrated on New Providence Island and in the capital Nassau. Twenty-two of the islands are inhabited. The highest point is Mount Alverina on Cat Island, at 63 m. Approximately 142 km of the territory is cultivated: there are no rivers in the Bahamas.*

Used stamps of Britain 1858-9 (obliterator A05 at Nassau) and first stamps issued 10th June 1859 inscribed 'Interinsular Postage'.

Two booklets were issued on August 15th 1961 containing stamps of the 1954-63 definitives. The 3 shilling with a brown purple cover contained 8 each of the 1d, 1½d, and 2d values in panes of 4. The 6 shilling with a green cover contained 4 each of the 4d, 6d and 8d values in panes of 4. Made up by Harrison and sons from normal sheets, half the supply had the covers inverted in relation to the stamps. Both books were stitched at the left and contained tropical interleaving.

The Coat of Arms bears the legend "Colony of Bahamas".

On March 23rd, 1965, two booklets were issued containing stamps of the 1965 definitive series.
The 3 shilling booklet with pink cover contained 8 each of the 1d, 1½d, and 2d values in panes of 4.
The 6 shilling booklet with green cover contained 4 each of the 4d, 6d and 8d values in panes of 4. Both booklets were stapled at the left and contained tropical interleaving. Again part of the supply had the covers inverted in relation to the stamps.
