Population (1996) 3,554,000. The country comprises most of the island of Ireland. The south is made up of rocky hills, none exceeding 1,000 meters in height. The central plain extends from east to west and is irrigated by many rivers and lakes. With a humid ocean climate and poor soil, much of the country is covered with grazing land. Farming is concentrated mainly along the eastern slopes of the hills and the Shannon valleys. The main agricultural products are wheat, barley, oats, potatoes and beet. Meat and milk processing are among the major local industrial activities.*
