Population (1996) 2,000. The Falkland Islands, which include the two main islands of East and West Falkland and about 200 small islands, lie in the South Atlantic Ocean. They are situated 772 km north-east of Cape Horn and cover 12,170 sq km. They are rocky and hilly with some boggy undulating plains. The highest point is Mt Usborne at 693 m. The capital is Port Stanley, the only town. In the camp (the countryside) the largest settlement is at Goose Green on East Falkland. The climate is cold, with strong westerly winds, particularly in spring. Rain on more than 180 days per year.* First stamps issued 19th June 1878. Falklands stamp booklet.
