Population (1996) 265,998. Located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, Iceland is an enormous plateau with an average altitude of 500 meters. A mountain range crosses the country from east to west passing through an extensive ice-covered region; source of the main rivers. The coastline falls sharply from the plateau forming fjords. Most of the population live in the coastal area in the south and west, where ocean currents temper the climate. Reykjavik, the capital and economic centre is located in a fertile plain where the largest cities are found. The northern coast is much colder as a result of Arctic Ocean currents. Geysers and active volcanoes are used as a source of energy. Agricultural output is poor; fishing accounts for 80% of all exports.*
Used stamps of Denmark from March 1870, numerals 236 and 237 being allocated to Reykjavik and Seydisfjordur respectively. Iceland stamp booklets.
