Lesotho is a land-locked enclave within the Republic of South Africa, covering an area of 30,355 square kms. divided into ten districts. Approximately two thirds of the terrain is mountainous, rising to 3,482 metres at the Thabana-Ntleayano in the north-east to south-west Mulati mountain chain. The highlands are dissected by a number of river valleys and gorges including the westward-flowing River Orange which rises in the central Mulatis. To the west, a 30-65 km wide belt of fertile land flanks the Caledon River, supporting the majority of the population and providing the bulk of Lesotho's agriculturally useful land. 10% of all land is arable and vegetation is limited to scattered willow, brush-wood and olive growth. *
