Located on the south-west coast of Africa and bisected by the Tropic of Capricorn, Namibia's area includes the enclave of Walvis Bay (some 90 sq. km.) over which South Africa maintains control, but which Namibia's 1990 independence constitution declares to be part of Namibian territory. From north to south, the arid and infertile Namib desert forms a rocky coastal belt averaging 100 km in width. North of Walvis Bay, Brandberg rises to 2,606 m. Namibia's highest peak. Inland, the central plateau (mean elevation 1,500 m) includes the Tsaris (south-west) Anas (central) and Erongo (west) Massifs, sloping in the south and east to meet the grassland of the Kalahari Desert. The Okavango (north) Orange (south) Kunene and Zambesi Rivers are the chief perennial waterbodies. The northern (administrative) districts are the most densely populated (inhabited by the Ovambo). 1% of the land is arable and 22% is (scrub) forest or woodland. *

First stamps issued 1st January 1923. Issues were bilingual in English and Afrikaans, but since 1970 have borne the abbreviations SWA instead.
