By 1917 a large enough part of German East Africa was securely in British hands for the application of civil administration. Control was exercised from Wilhelmstad until the capital was returned to Dar-es-Salaam in 1920. Shorn of Ruanda-Urundi and Kionga, the territory, mandated to Britain was renamed Tanganyika in 1920. Tanganyika (1961-5) became independent within the Commonwealth on 9th December 1961. The first stamps for independent Tanganyika were issued on that date. Tanganyika federated with Zanzibar in April 1964. It was known as Tanzania after 17th November 1964.*

Issued on December 9th, 1961, this stitched booklet with blue-green cover and interleaves contained four 10c, four 15c, four 20c, four 30c and four 50c stamps of the 1961-64 Independence issue in panes of four. These booklets have panes sideways or inverted.
