Located in the south-western Pacific Ocean approximately 2,880 km north-east of New Zealand (Auckland), Western Samoa comprises two main islands (Upolu and Savai'i) and a number of smaller islands of which two are inhabited (Apolima and Manono). On Savai'i, the rugged volcanic interior rises to a maximum elevation of 1,829 m. Upolu's highest peak attains an altitude of 1,097 m. Both islands exhibit similar geographical features; a mountainous central region covered by dense tropical forest and cut by swift, torrential rivers, ecnompassed by narrow coastal plains and coral reefs. Major streams include the Sili and Faleata on Savai'i and Vaisigano on Upolu. 19% of the land is arable and 47% is forested. *

Western Samoa stamp booklets.

Covers.

 

Issued in 1960, this 2/7 booklet with buff cover is stapled at the top. It contains stamps from the 1952 definitive series and the panes are sideways or inverted. The panes are :- ½d x 6, 1d x 4, 2d x 6 and 3d x 4 and are separated by plain interleaving. The inside front cover lists 'Western Samoa Postage Rates', the inside back cover lists the description of 'Western Samoa Pictorial Postage Stamps' from ½d to 3/- and the outer back cover gives the address of the Chief Postmaster. Apia, from whom the stamps were obtainable. This is the third colour change of the booklet cover - the others being first yellow and then green.

Issued at the same time as booklet No. 1, the 6/- booklet with blue cover contains panes of four stamps of the 1d, 3d, 6d and 8d definitives. The cover printing details are the same as booklet No. 1. This is also the third colour change of the cover - the first being pink and then grey.


Issued with booklets No. 1 and 2, the 9/9d booklet with white cover contains panes of 6 stamps of the ½d, 2d, 5d and 1s definitives. The printing details are the same as for the two previous books and this is also the third colour change of the cover - the first being blue and the second yellow.
