POSTAL UNIFORMS SERIES.

This new series was designed by Clive Abbott. The covers were orange yellow and the stamp contents were as in the June 1974 Pillar Boxes series being on Fluorescent coated paper (FCP) with Poly vinyl alcohol with dextrin (PVAD) gum.
The first illustration of the series was of a General Post Letter Carrier of 1793. Inscribed on the back cover 'August 1974' it was issued on July 23rd 1974 and the number printed was 5,011,270.
This illustration was also used on the edition inscribed October 1974 and issued on 27th August 1974. Numbers printed were 4,364,520.

Postal Uniforms No. 1.
The cover drawing shows the uniform supplied officially to the London General Letter Post Carrier in 1793. This comprised a beaver hat, a scarlet coat with brass buttons and a blue cloth waistcoat. The splendid coats and hats presented a strange contrast above the 'ragged cloaths' of trousers, which the men were required to provide for themselves.

Number two in the series illustrated a Letter Carrier of 1837. The booklet was inscribed December 1974 and issued on 25th October 1974. Printing figures were 3,801,980.
The same cover was used for the February 1975 edition, issued 12th December 1974 and the print figures for this were 2,250,000.

Postal Uniforms No. 2.
The cover drawing shows a District Letter Carrier of 1837, known as 'twopenny postmen' because they were employed within the limits of the Twopenny Post — a local service. The uniform consisted of a blue cut-away coat with a scarlet collar, blue vest and beaver hat with gold band and cockade.

The third in the series illustrated a Letter Carrier of 1855 and this appeared on the last five of the booklets in this series.

April 1975, issued on 26th March 1975, number printed 4,603,870.
June 1975, issued on 21st May 1975, number printed 3,165,010.
August 1975, issued on 27th June 1975, number printed 6,149,760.
October 1975, issued on 3rd October 1975, number printed 8,621,600.
January 1976, issued on 16th March 1976, number printed unavailable.

Postal Uniforms No. 3.
The cover drawing shows the uniform of the 1855 letter carrier. This consisted of a scarlet frock coat, grey trousers and a glazed tall hat. The Illustrated Glasgow News of June 1855 said: "So brilliant does the tout ensemble appear that we are astonished at the liberality of the Government and cannot help thinking that the coats must have been cabbaged from the Crimea."
