In the late 1830's a dated, three line, framed type came into use in Glasgow. We currently have no examples of this mark.
This type of mark was also issued without the frame, was well used and also exists in various colours and with time letters or the time in full.

Note the different routing codes and the 'A' time letter before the mileage on the Paisley mark.
The cover illustrated below is interesting in that it bears three different mileage marks:- 1)Unframed three line STIRLING 15 MAR 1823 2) Unframed three linePAISLEY 16 MAR 1823 M 413 - G (M time code) and 3)Circular GLASGOW 405 - G M 16 MAR 1823 (note the M time code). The additional halfpenny mark and the manuscript 7 make it quite a 'busy' cover.

In 1829 Postmasters were told to remove any incorrect mileage numbers from their hand-stamps. This, plus the introduction of new types of marks without mileage numbers, led to the gradual disappearance of these numbers, although there were survivals into the 1850's.
